Wishaw cable theft leads to mass power outage

Date: 21/6/2012

The theft of cables from a substation in Wishaw has resulted in more than 1,000 properties in the area being left without electricity.

According to the Wishaw Press, the targeting of the facility at Auchterhead meant homes in the region, as well as some in Newmains, Morningside and Bogside, suffered a temporary power cut.

The thieves are likely to have made off with the copper cable in the hope of selling it on for profit, but their actions not only impacted local residents, but also placed their own safety at risk.

A spokesperson for ScottishPower stated: "Dangerous acts like this not only have the potential to cause serious injury but could also result in widespread loss of electricity supply to homes and businesses."

The representative went on to note the company needs to ensure all of its equipment is in good working order to maintain the required electricity supply to all its customers.
