Power cables could be buried underground to prevent electricity cuts caused by extreme weather, it has been suggested.
Martin Deehan, area manager for Electricity North West, noted laying the lines beneath the surface is one way to ensure they are better protected against hazardous conditions and other factors, such as overhanging tree branches.
Mr Deehan was speaking as it was announced engineers will re-route cables underground along Haverflatts in the Cumbrian village Milnthorpe, the BBC reports.
The new setup will replace overhead power lines in the region, which may have been at risk during the hazardous conditions and heavy rainfall seen across much of Britain in recent weeks.
Mr Deehan stated: "Projects like this help to ensure the region's electricity network is better protected from any external factors that can cause unplanned power cuts."
The work - which is expected to last from July 23rd to the end of August - is being timed with the local school holidays to ensure travel disruption is minimal.
