Outdoor antennas to be used at London Olympics

Date: 1/2/2012

Outdoor antennas are going to be used at the London Olympics later this year to provide network access throughout stadiums.

Cisco has announced it will be employing CleanAir technology at the venues to work out which parts of a facility will offer the best delivery of services, Techworld reports.

Edwin Paalvast, vice president of service providers for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at the company, explained that a stadium can be separated into various segments, with each area operating on a different frequency.

The industry figure added: "If you do this very cleverly and use different antenna technology, some antennas actually cover anybody who falls out of certain segments and others are directed towards certain segments."

Each of the antennas are joined to one virtual network - so individual movement can be detected and handed over in a similar way to a mobile network.

The London Olympics will be taking place between July 27th and August 12th later this year.

Quadrant Connections offer a complete range of base-station antennas for mobile communication networks.
