It is hoped a new law preventing scrap dealers from making payments by cash will deter power cable thieves and help in the national fight against the stealing of valuable metals.
The measures are likely to be put into practice by April as part of a clause in the Legal Aid Bill, the Daily Mail reports.
By banning monetary purchases and imposing unlimited fines for scrap dealers who are caught trading stolen materials, it is anticipated that it will be easier for authorities to identify and track down those guilty of theft.
Rail cables are just one of the items being targeted by criminals eager to make a quick profit by selling off the metals, with sculptures and even war memorials being stripped on a regular basis.
Earlier in the month, the London Evening Standard reported that a power cable theft in London resulted in the travel plans of hundreds of thousands of train customers in the capital being disrupted.
