Cable theft 'led to music festival evacuation'

Cable thefts at a substation in Derbyshire resulted in a nearby music festival being evacuated, it has been claimed.

According to Western Power Distribution, the criminal act in Heanor caused a blackout that meant power had to be re-routed at the Rock and Blues Old School Weekender Festival at Pentrich.

As a result of this action, an overhead power cable in a field next to the gathering snapped.

While nobody was injured, fire crews cordoned off the area to enable workers from Western Power Distribution to fix the problem.

David Crowther, station manager at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, noted: "An electrical cable fell from an overhead pylon striking the camp - it was a lucky escape for a lot of people."

Western Power Distribution spokesman Michael Clarke revealed the issue was solved and the festival - which included acts such as UK Subs, Ozzbest and Bad Axe - was able to proceed as normal.
