LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It is one of the platforms which can be officially classed as 4G technology.
The advantage of LTE, and other 4G services, will include faster connection speeds to allow the streaming of high quality video or audio, the ability to download much larger data files, than current 3G services for smart phones or tablet devices.
For mobile network providers, LTE will allow support of more users, handle much more data and better network coverage with less equipment. This will greatly reduce the costs eventually leading to cheaper services.
However, the roll out of LTE would require a network provider to completely upgrade their network infrastructure.
Recent blogs suggest that AT&T LTE network trials in USA have clocked speeds of 6-13 Mbps download and 1-2Mbps upload. These reported speeds are based on trials networks or hotspots and speeds might change when there are more users and the network is commercially available.
LTE can, theoretically, support download speeds of 300Mbps.
